BAYONNE - A Jersey City resident was struck and killed while attempting to get into his SUV in Bayonne.

The 43-year-old man had just walked out of a doctor’s office and was trying to get into his SUV when he was hit by a pickup truck traveling along JFK Boulevard between West 30th and 31st streets Wednesday around 2:30 p.m.

Police initially said that the driver of the pickup stopped immediately, but witnesses tell News 12 New Jersey that the driver continued for about a block and a half more before crashing into a parked car.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity was not immediately released.

The crash happened in front of an elementary school that was just getting out for the day. Witnesses say that the school staff tried to shield the students from seeing the crash scene.

It was not immediately known if the driver of the pickup truck was hurt or will face any charges.
