JERSEY CITY - As revelers donned red, white and blue for Fourth of July celebrations in Jersey City, local officials deployed extra blue uniforms around the festivities.

Police in New Jersey joined their counterparts throughout the country in stepping up security measures for the holiday weekend. News 12 previously reported that the Department of Homeland Security issued a heightened terror alert for Independence Day.

Officials say more than 70,000 people filled Liberty State Park Saturday for live music, amusement rides and July Fourth fireworks, and the police presence was visible at nearly every turn.

State police joined the patrols both on land and in the Hudson River. They deployed radiation-detecting equipment.

Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop says authorities were taking the terror alert seriously and went to great lengths to keep citizens safe.

A fireworks show capped off the full-day festival that also featured a Special Olympics event that raised about $36,000 for charity.
