BELMAR - A coat drive in Belmar has collected 1,200 winter coats as part of an effort coordinated by the group Jersey Cares.

The coats were all counted, bagged up, loaded into a truck and sent off by volunteers outside town hall Friday.

The nonprofit was holding similar drives in 20 other locations around New Jersey.

Heather O'Loughlin, with Jersey Cares, says they are still collecting donations around the state. "We have containers located in different counties so if people have coats they can find our containers and drop off where convenient."

The coats gathered today in Belmar are being sent to the Pentecostal Council Church of God in New Brunswick. They will be given to those in need during a coat giveaway on Jan. 4.
