EAST BRUNSWICK - Counselors were on hand at Spotswood High School Monday after two teens were killed when their car ran off the roadway and overturned in a wooded area over the weekend.
The driver, 17-year-old Jeffrey Szatkowski, of Spotswood, was a senior at Spotswood High School and a member of the varsity football and baseball teams. His 18-year-old passenger, Nicole Surace, of Milltown, graduated in June from the school, where she was a cheerleader, and was a freshman at Monmouth University.
Authorities say the couple was celebrating the holiday weekend Saturday night when Szatkowski's 2004 Ford Mustang ran off a road, struck a utility pole, overturned and hit a tree.
A growing memorial of flowers, photos and notes marks the spot where the teens lost their lives.
Friends are still in shock over the tragic loss. "Nicole was always a very warmhearted person, she always knew how to make everyone happy," says classmate Andrew Welsh. "Just hard to believe that this would happen to someone that we all knew so well."
Surace tweeted on Thanksgiving Day, "I'm thankful for my amazing boyfriend and best friend who I love with all my heart."
"They were definitely the cutest couple," says former schoolmate Amanda Gayda. "They were that signature football player, cheerleader. But they were friends with everybody."
It's not yet known what caused the crash.
