Italian-American group: Paterson SD needs history lesson

PATERSON - After a delayed start to the school year because of flooding, the Paterson School District decided to make up some of that time by holding classes on Columbus Day, next Monday.

However, canceling the observance of the federal holiday outraged some Italian-Americans. Andre DiMino of the Italian American One Voice says that the people in charge of the Paterson School District need a history lesson.

Monday afternoon the district reversed its decision, saying next Monday there will be no classes and the day will be made up another time. The district said it had chosen Columbus Day because it was early in the school year and a non-religious holiday.
