EDISON - Thousands of customers are without power around the Garden State this evening after icy weather conditions swept the state.

About 26,000 homes and businesses are without electricity.

The state's largest utility, PSE&G, says about 1,300 are without service. Woodbridge, Carteret, Bridgewater and Edison were among the hardest hit areas.

Jersey Central Power and Light says there are about 3,000 customers without service, mainly in Hunterdon and Middlesex counties.

Crews are working to restore service, but say they're being hampered by icy road conditions.
