More than 100 families have complained since October to Newark inspectors about living without heat.

NEWARK - As temperatures dip into some of the coldest overnight lows of the season, there are hundreds of families in Newark still without heat.

Landlords are required by law to keep dwellings at a minimum of 65 degrees overnight and 68 degrees during the day. Still, many families say they've been suffering without heat, and in some cases no power or hot water, since October.

Tashida Daniels, of the Lincoln Park section of Newark, is in a dispute with her landlord. The mother of three says her landlord cut the lights, water and heat. Inspectors are helping her with temporary shelter until she can settle in court.

Another Lincoln Park family says their landlord didn't purchase heaters for any of the tenants, forcing them to go out and buy their own.

Inspectors have been working to put pressure on landlords to keep their buildings in compliance. Residents say they've been a helpful presence.

In addition, tenants without power are encouraged to call the city's No Heat Hotline.
