JERSEY CITY - Hundreds of New Jersey residents gathered in Jersey City’s Newark Avenue pedestrian mall Monday to rally against President Donald Trump’s temporary travel ban and to support immigrants.

The rally, dubbed on social media as "Jersey City Stands,”  was organized by community activist Michael Billy over the weekend after word of Trump’s executive order banning citizens of seven Muslim-majority countries got out. Billy says that Jersey City was the best place to hold a rally because of the diversity.

“We are one of the most diverse cities in the nation. We've got more spoken languages per capita and right now there's a rallying cry for our organizations and sub groups to come together,” he says.

Billy says the rally is to celebrate humanity and American values. The crowd chanted “We are all refugees” and listened to various speakers deliver messages of unification, justice and action.

“We condemn all kind of terrorism whoever, wherever.  But do not isolate any community based on faith or religion or nationality.  That's unacceptable in today's world,” says rally co-host Imtiaz Syed.

The group also held a moment of silence for those killed and injured at the mosque shooting in Canada over the weekend.
