Human remains found in suitcase in Newark

NEWARK - Authorities announced this morning that they are investigating the discovery of human remains found inside a suitcase that washed ashore in Newark.

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office says the remains were found near Raymond Boulevard and Van Buren Street, near the Passaic River. The area is not far from Newark Penn Station.

The prosecutor's office says the remains appear to be the body of a black female and that the body was clothed in gray dress pants and a red blouse. Prosecutors say it is unclear at this time how long the body had been in the water and that an autopsy is being performed to determine the cause of death.

Newark police and the county's Homicide and Major Crimes Task Force are investigating the case.
