WASHINGTON - The United States’ 115th Congress was sworn in at the Capitol building in Washington.

House Republicans pulled their first planned vote to gut the Office of Congressional Ethics, an act that President-elect Donald Trump criticized.

Trump said that he wanted the House’s first move to be to start to repeal the Affordable Care Act.

Seton Hall professor Matt Hale says that legislators are gearing up for a challenging 100 days in Congress. He says that it is a time when presidents have passed historic legislation and it’s when they most often get what they want.

“The first 100 days is kind of a honeymoon period. It’s like a time when everyone wants to give the new president the benefit of the doubt and it’s a time when the president wants to put some points on the board,” Hale says.

Vice President-elect Mike Pence is expected to meet with House Republicans this week to discuss plans to repeal the health care law. President Obama is expected to meet with House and Senate Democrats this week to discuss plans to protect the law.

New Jersey’s lawmakers have locked in prominent spots in Congress. Democratic Sen. Cory Booker is on the Foreign Relations Committee. Republican Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen is now the chairman of the Appropriations Committee.

The new Congress has new confirmation hearings ahead as the Senate begins its consideration of the president-elect's department heads and cabinet appointments.
