EDISON - FedEx is gearing up for its busiest time of the year as Christmas nears.

At a facility in Edison, crews are working around the clock to sort and process the thousands of packages that pass through their warehouse.

FedEx officials estimate nearly 16 million packages were shipped worldwide yesterday alone. More than 223 million packages will move through its global networks between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

The company says much of the packages are driven by online retailers and catalog orders that arrive as gifts at homes for the holiday.
