SAYREVILLE - Police say two young brothers walking to school in Sayreville were struck by a hit-and-run driver.
The boys, ages 5 and 8, were in a crosswalk near Our Lady of Victories School when they were hit around 7:45 a.m. Monday. There was a uniformed crossing guard on duty at the time of the crash.
Police say that the driver, Margaret Cheheli, of Sayreville, was apprehended a short time after fleeing the scene. Two parents were able to identify her to the authorities.
Cheheli allegedly abandoned her car and tossed away her keys after the crash. She was arrested while walking on Main Street.
Witnesses tell News 12 New Jersey that the Our Lady of Victories school nurse came out immediately after the crash and provided aid to the 5-year-old before emergency services arrived.
The boys were taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital for treatment. The 8-year-old was treated and released, but the 5-year-old remains hospitalized.
Cheheli faces several charges, including two counts of aggravated assault. Her bail was set at $100,000.
