HIGHLAND PARK - Several students and staff escaped unharmed when a fire broke out at a private school in Highland Park that serves children with special needs.

The school was closed today and will remain closed tomorrow.

Classes at the school had ended before the fire broke out at around 5:30 p.m. yesterday. Officials say roughly 18 students and nine adults were still in the three-story brick building at the time, taking part in after-school activities. Authorities say everyone in the building escaped unharmed.

Firefighters from Highland Park and other nearby communities were able to quickly bring the blaze under control.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
