JERSEY CITY - A family and an entire school are grieving tonight over the loss of a young swimmer.

The 18-year-old, B.J. Giannone, collapsed and died at a Saint Peter's Prep swim meet last night.

News 12 New Jersey spoke with Giannone's friends and coach. Giannone had just cut more than seven seconds off his time for the 200-yard freestyle and was elated.

Coach Ryan Heffernan says he was at Giannone's side when he got out of the pool. Heffernan says they walked away from each other and the next thing he heard was a thud and Giannone had collapsed. CPR failed to revive the 18-year-old. His friends tell News 12 New Jersey he was known for his sense of humor and being a loyal friend.

Students at Saint Peter's held a memorial for Giannone this morning.

The wake will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Mountainside on Thursday and Friday, from 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. - 9 p.m.

The funeral Mass will be held in the Saint Peter's Prep gymnasium on Saturday at 2 p.m., with a gathering to follow in the O'Keefe Commons at the school.

The family asked in lieu of flowers, that donations be sent to The B.J. Giannone Memorial Fund at Saint Peter's Prep.
