CHATHAM - Parts of North Jersey saw nearly 1 foot of snow Thursday.

The snow started to fall around 4 a.m., but it wasn’t until daybreak that the storm ramped up. At one point in the morning, snow was falling at a rate of 1 or 2 inches an hour.

By the mid-afternoon most of the snow had subsided.

School districts around the state canceled classes due to the conditions, allowing children to go out and enjoy a snow day. News 12 New Jersey caught up with many kids who were out sledding and playing in the snow.

While the children were playing, parents and other adults were also out clearing their driveways, walkways and parking spots.

Road crews were out since the early morning plowing and salting the streets. Residents reported that most of the main roads seemed to be cleared of snow, but some secondary roads were still being worked on.

Temperatures were expected to drop overnight, leading to the potential for a refreeze of some of the slushy snow on the roads. Drivers were being urged to use caution while traveling.
