PASSAIC - The five-alarm fire that destroyed a Passaic apartment building also took its toll on the firefighters, battling the heat along with the flames.
Passaic authorities say nine firefighters were brought to St. Mary's Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation and heat exhaustion.
"If you're a firefighter in this heat, it's especially deadly," says Vanessa Warren of St. Mary's. "They have hundreds of pounds of gear on and they're entering a situation where the heat is intense."
Officials say five residents were also taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation and other minor injuries. Some residents, like Kimberly Sabando, lost everything in the fire, including two family cats.
Families are getting assistance from the Red Cross as the Passaic Senior Center.
