TRENTON - (AP) - A New Jersey judge has set a hearing for a lawsuit from state police unions who say Gov. Chris Christie would be breaking the law by slashing the state's contributions to pensions for public workers.

The hearing is scheduled for June 25, five days before the Legislature must adopt a balanced budget. If the judge says the state cannot cut the payments, it would set off a scramble for Christie and lawmakers to figure out what spending can be reduced.

Christie's administration realized in April that state revenues for the current fiscal year were below expectations and then reduced the projections for next year. The state said it would have $2.75 billion less than expected through June 2015.

Christie wants to balance both years' budgets mostly by eliminating pension contributions.
