HASBROUCK HEIGHTS - Commuters and officials alike say a fence designed to keep people off train tracks is causing safety concerns.
The 8-foot fence spans 300 feet at the Hasbrouck Heights train station. It separates the platform on one side of the tracks from a parking lot on the other.
New Jersey Transit crews put up the fence in January as part of an overall effort to curb trespassing. The agency says many people were walking on the tracks and crossing in unsafe areas.
Now, officials and commuters say there's no easy route to the platform from the other side, which could become dangerous.
The mayor and council of Hasbrouck Heights have met with New Jersey Transit about finding a better option. New Jersey Transit officials say safety on train tracks is its top priority, and it has no plans to take down the fence anytime soon.
