HACKENSACK - Area hospitals are watching the weather closely and preparing for weather-related injuries.

The dangerous deep freeze can lead to hypothermia and frostbite. "The temperatures we're talking about could lead to injury in just five minutes," says Dr. Doug Finefrock, of Hackensack University Medical Center, "a lot faster than people might think."

Another real danger is slip and fall injuries. Surfaces that are still wet could get you a trip to the emergency room.

At Hackensack University Medical Center, dozens of patients have already been treated after tumbling on snow or ice. About 70 patients were seen Sunday for these types of injuries, according to Finefrock.

Doctors say their best advice is to stay indoors if you can.
