EDISON - Authorities say some powerful guns are now off the streets of Middlesex County after a gun buyback event collected more than 1,800 firearms.

The guns were purchased by the state for $250 each, with no questions asked, at three churches in the county.

Among the weapons was an AR-15 style assault weapon, the same gun used in the Newtown, Conn. school massacre.

Sacred Heart in New Brunswick was one of the drop-off locations and is in a neighborhood that is no stranger to gun violence.

The attorney general says the guns collected at the event will be destroyed.

There have been 10 gun buybacks conducted across New Jersey this year, and 16,000 guns have been collected.
