FAIR LAWN - A group is pushing to move a historic North Jersey home so it can be preserved.

The Vanderbeck house in Fair Lawn, which is on the national and state registries of historic places, was built before the American Revolution.

The property is slated to be redeveloped and turned into an assisted living center.

Officials from a historical society want to have the house moved to another site nearby.

Residents say they support the preservation of historic buildings where possible. "They did that with the train station in Radburn," says Simon Galperin. "There was an historic building there that used to be somewhere else. So they moved it over. If they can make that happen and still keep this area attractive, why not?"

The Fair Lawn council will hold a zoning hearing Thursday night regarding the assisted living center.

If the Vanderbeck house cannot be moved, it will likely be torn down.
