ROSELLE PARK - The federal government shutdown is taking its toll on an unlikely industry - beer-making.

The Treasury Department has to approve and inspect all new breweries, and right now those workers are not at their jobs.

David Hoffman, of Climax Brewing Company in Roselle Park, says he faced the same challenge in 1995 when he launched his company. The federal government was in the middle of its last shutdown.

"I had to pay my rent; I had to pay my utilities," Hoffman says. "I had to pay for my first order of grain, because everything in the brewing business gets paid in 30 days or less."

Hoffman says the last shutdown set him three months behind, and cost him at least $20,000.
