TRENTON - (AP) - Gov. Chris Christie has signed into law a measure creating a voluntary registry to notify family members when someone is involved in a serious auto accident.

The measure, known as "Sara's Law," allows those with New Jersey driver's licenses or state-issued identification cards to electronically submit the name and telephone number of an emergency contact to the Motor Vehicle Commission.

If the person is killed, incapacitated or seriously injured in an accident, law enforcement would use the registry to notify the emergency contact.

The bill is named for Sara Dubinin of Sayreville. It took 90 minutes to notify her parents after the 19-year-old was critically injured in an accident in 2007.

The law takes effect in 18 months to give the MVC time to develop the registry.
