WASHINGTON - Gov. Chris Christie and his wife Mary Pat were in Washington Tuesday to have lunch at the White House with President Donald Trump.

The lunch was billed as a visit to discuss drug abuse prevention, a topic that has become a major initiative for Christie this year. But some political watchers are wondering if the meeting was about Christie’s future in the Trump administration.

Christie arrived in Washington Tuesday morning and seemed to be in good spirits. He says that he was invited to the White House by the president a few days ago. He also brushed off any rumors that the meeting was anything other than a social call.

On his monthly call-in radio show on NJ 101.5, the governor said Monday, “My expectation is that I am going to serve out my term here as governor… and leave office on Jan. 18, 2018 after 16 years and one day of public service as both U.S. attorney and governor and go to the private sector and support my family in a different way than I have before.”

The lunch lasted about 90 minutes because Trump was scheduled to sign a resolution related to Dodd-Frank legislation at 2 p.m. Christie attended that resolution signing.
