TRENTON - Gov. Chris Christie today took the oath of office for his second term.

Organizers canceled Christie's planned inaugural party at Ellis Island as a winter storm approached the region.

The Republican governor said in his address that he has a mandate to stay the course and unite the state's sometimes divergent interests.

"It wasn't just some of our people who affirmed this course," Christie said. "It was not a vocal plurality like four years ago. No, this time, it was the largest and loudest voice of affirmation that the people of our state have given to any direction in three decades."

The governor also reiterated his call for tax cuts for the middle class.

Christie didn't directly mention investigations into his administration's apparently politically motivated decision to close approach lanes to the George Washington Bridge in September, causing a traffic backup.

"It's a distraction for him and it's a distraction for us that we have to work through," says Senate President Steve Sweeney. "There's just way too many things that have to be done in this state and we're all just going to have to bear with it and work through it and we will."

Sweeney says he wanted to hear the governor talk about restoring tax credits for low-income workers and making college more affordable.

Christie won re-election in November by a 22-point margin over Democratic state Sen. Barbara Buono.
