WARETOWN - New Jersey Republican U.S. Rep. Tom MacArthur held an in-person town hall meeting Monday after earlier sticking with telephone meetings only.

It was the first in-person meeting MacArthur has held due to concerns about protesters opposed to policies put into place by President Donald Trump.

MacArthur, whose district includes parts of Ocean and Burlington counties, voted against a measure aimed at paving the way for the Republican-led Congress to repeal the health care law.

The congressman took questions on several domestic issues including the EPA, education, health care and gun control.

He also spoke about the alleged ties between the Trump administration and Russia.

“Vladimir Putin is a thug. We all know that, he is a thug,” MacArthur said. “The day may come when an independent investigation is appropriate.  I don't think that day has come yet.”

MacArthur said he believes that there was Russian interference in the presidential election and he believes the investigations both at the FBI and on Capitol Hill should be able to take their course.

There was a small group of demonstrators outside the meeting with people both supporting the congressman and those who objected to his viewpoints.
