Good Samaritan Darren Talington fatally shot at Jersey City deli after coming to aid of female customer
JERSEY CITY - Police say a man who was believed to be sticking up for a young woman inside a Jersey City deli, was shot and killed after an argument with another man.
The Grove Street neighborhood, near City Hall, is considered one of the safest in the area, residents say.
Darren Talington, 25, was inside the A-Plus Deli at 3:30 a.m. Saturday buying food when he confronted a man police say was harassing a woman, according to the Hudson County Prosecutors Office. The two men came out to the street, where a third man shot Talington multiple times. He later died from his injuries.

Erika Alvarez says she always felt safe walking home from the Grove Street PATH, when she came upon the crime scene. "It's unfortunate, because it is such a good area," she says. "But it doesn't matter - wrong time, wrong moment."
Investigators are using surveillance video from inside the store to try and track down suspects. Those who live nearby say while tragic, this incident is an exception, not the rule in their neighborhood.
"I don't feel any less safe," Alvarez says. "Because it doesn't happen often. It was shocking and disappointing."
A viewing and funeral will be held for Talington in Jersey City on Friday night.
