GoNewark Hoopfest tips off in Newark

NEWARK - The NCAA "Sweet 16" Tournament festivities have tipped off in Newark today with Fanfest, which will continue until Sunday.

Many attended an open practice held this afternoon for the Kentucky Wildcats. A college fair showcasing 21 New Jersey colleges was also held for high school seniors in attendance. There are also live performances planned on the festival stage at the Prudential Center.

Mayor Cory Booker told News 12 New Jersey that no major crimes were committed in the part of the city near the Prudential Center this year. He says the area around the Newark arena is safer than any other arena areas in the country.

The "Sweet 16" round is scheduled to start Friday evening.
