NUTLEY - Early this morning, an 11-year-old girl was walking in the parking lot of the Good Shepherd Academy in Nutley. It is believed she stopped to pick something up in front of an SUV, but police are still investigating if she was bent over in front of the car.

A woman driving the SUV ran the girl over and pinned her underneath the vehicle. Witnesses saw it happen and yelled to get the driver to stop. They also placed calls to 911.

Police, firefighters and EMTs responded to the incident and about a dozen parents of students assisted them in lifting the vehicle enough to pull the girl clear.

She's expected to survive her injuries. She was pinned underneath the SUV for 20 minutes.

The driver was issued a citation for careless driving this afternoon.
