EAST RUTHERFORD - A new partnership was announced Thursday between the New York Giants and medical testing company Quest Diagnostics.
The move is an effort to use research to improve the health and performance of players. The team's training facility will also be renamed.
Coaches hope the partnership will result in reducing injuries and improving the players' overall health.
The organizations say they will work together to come up with new ways to measure pulse, respiration and blood pressure, as well as glucose and lactate levels. The plan is to combine that information with other data such as speed, and how hard players hit each other on the field.
Insights gained through the team's research may even benefit amateur athletes. For now, it will help the Giants create nutrition and training regimens customized for each player's body.
The team also hopes to work with Quest to study the long-term consequences of head injuries.
