Gas main break sends flames into air in Scotch Plains

SCOTCH PLAINS - A gas main break erupted into flames early this morning in Scotch Plains.

Downed power lines and trees were seen near the massive flames that were shooting out of the main on Cooper Road.

Elizabethtown Gas spokeswoman Tami Gerka says high winds downed power lines on a tree and the tree fell on the pipe around 5 a.m.

Gerka says less than 30 homes lost gas service while workers tried to close the main.

Public Service Electric and Gas says 630 electric customers are also without power as a result of the break.

AP wire services contributed to this report.
