SPRING LAKE - Funeral services were held in Spring Lake today for 23-year-old Army Sgt. James Harvey of Toms River.

Friends and family members gathered this morning at the St. Catharine's Roman Catholic Church to remember the fallen soldier.

Department of Defense officials say Harvey died on June 20 of wounds that he suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with small firearms in Ghazni Province, Afghanistan.

The 23-year-old had been assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 2nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team and 1st Infantry Division, based out of Fort Knox, Ky.

The young soldier was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He was also promoted from the rank of Corporal.

Harvey is being laid to rest in St. Anne's Cemetery in Wall with full military honors.
