LAKEWOOD - Friends and family held a vigil Friday to honor an Ocean County man killed two days after his 24th birthday.

The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office says police found Kenneth Scott shot at the High Point Apartments in Lakewood on Thursday night. Scott was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, where he died early Friday.

Scott became a father for the second time this week, according to friends.

Witnesses say Scott was shot in the back and was playing a dice game before the incident. He did not live at the complex, but in nearby Jackson Township.

Police say the complex is known for gang activity, but longtime residents tell News 12 New Jersey the community is safe. The department was able to avoid layoffs in recent years, and has increased patrols in the neighborhood.

Police have not released any information on possible suspects.
