Former Perth Amboy mayor convicted of corruption

NEWARK - Former longtime Perth Amboy Mayor Joseph Vas and one of his trusted aides, Melvin Ramos, have been convicted of fraud.

Vas was convicted on five counts, including mail fraud, misappropriating funds, lying to federal officials and taking illegal campaign contributions.

Ramos was also convicted on charges of mail fraud, making false statements and violating campaign finance laws.

Neither Vas nor Ramos had anything to say regarding the charges. Both may face years behind bars. Vas was Perth Amboy's mayor for 18 years, and a state assemblyman for six years.
