Former NBA star Shaquille O'Neal eyes Newark for new NBA team

NEWARK - If former NBA star, and Newark native, Shaquille O'Neal gets his way, Newark could once again have its own NBA team.

In a statement, O'Neal says talks are under way to bring a franchise back to the city after the New Jersey Nets leave for Brooklyn at the end of this season. The season may never happen due to the current lockout between team owners and players over compensation agreements.

Newark Mayor Cory Booker is on board with the idea, tweeting in part, "We think NJ deserves an NBA team."

While the deal is far from done, the biggest obstacle is the two other teams in the market, the New York Knicks and the soon-to-be Brooklyn Nets. Both teams would likely object to adding another team to the market.
