PATERSON - Voters have elected a former mayor over the incumbent mayor in Paterson.

Joey Torres defeated Jeffery Jones in the race Tuesday.

Jones ran against seven other candidates, including Councilman Andre Sayegh, former councilman Aslon Goow, Rigo Rodriguez, David Gilmore, Donna Ivy and Maria Feliciano.

There were also eight candidates running for city council.

Deteriorating roads, property taxes, and crime in the city drove voters to the polls.

There was also an especially high number of absentee ballots cast.
