NEWARK - A 59-year-old woman died in a house fire in Newark Friday. She was related to some of the firefighters on the scene.
Crews were called to the home on Bellair Place at approximately 6:45 p.m. There were reports that Denise Taylor Kaminski was trapped inside.
Firefighters tried to reach her, but the intense flames held them back. Kaminski, a recently retired hospice nurse was found dead on the second floor.
A fire department spokesman says a firefighter received second-degree burns in the blaze and was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital for treatment.
Two of the firefighters who responded to the fire where Kaminski's nephews.
Newark Councilman Luis Quintana lives on the block and knows the family. He says the victim's sister and brother were at a doctor's appointment and returned to find the home on fire.
Neighbors say Kaminski had taken care of many people from the neighborhood.
Another person inside the home at the time of the fire was able to escape the home unharmed.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but officials believe it may have started on the second floor.
