PORT READING - A former Carteret police officer has been charged with aggravated arson after investigators say he tried to burn down his own home.

Investigators with the Middlesex County Prosecutor's office say David Boland, 52, intentionally set fire to his house in Port Reading earlier this week.

Boland retired in 1998 on a disability pension after working as a police officer for more than 13 years. A motive has yet to be determined.
