Flood damage closes most parts of Newark school

NEWARK - A Newark school will not open for the new school year as planned because of flood damage caused by Hurricane Irene.

On Tuesday, students will be transported from the Wilson Avenue playground to St. Anthony's in Belleville and to Quitman Street School in Newark. Grades 1 through 3 will go to St. Anthony's and Grades 4 through 8 will go to Quitman. Pre-K and kindergarten students will remain at the Wilson School Annex.

The district says it is estimated that it will take six to nine months to repair the damage at the Wilson Avenue School.

The district will host a community meeting tomorrow night to explain the latest developments to the school.

The times for the meetings are: 4 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. at Quitman Street School and 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. at East Side High School. Hurricane Irene: From Coast to Crest FEMA opens hotline, website for NJ Paterson residents finally allowed back home after storm
