WOODBRIDGE - Firefighters have gained the upper hand on a large brush fire in Middlesex County. 

The fire broke out late Wednesday afternoon in Woodbridge Township, near the junction of Interstate 287 and the Garden State Parkway.
 
Plumes of thick black smoke could be seen for miles before firefighters gained control and rain helped extinguish the blaze.
 
The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
