RED BANK - Firefighters in Red Bank reportedly saved a trapped police officer during an apartment fire yesterday.

Two officers went inside the Metropolitan Apartments on Wallace Street at around 7 p.m. looking for residents before firefighters arrived and became trapped by thick smoke.

Red Bank Fire Chief John Mego told the Asbury Park Press that one officer got out of the building, but a collapsed ceiling trapped the other officer in a second-floor apartment. Firefighters used an aerial ladder to reach the officer.

AP wire services contributed to this report.
