Firefighters extinguish 5-alarm fire in Elizabeth

ELIZABETH - Firefighters have extinguished an early morning five-alarm fire in a furniture warehouse in Elizabeth.

The fire broke out at around 4 a.m. at the store, located on First Street between Court and South Park streets.

More than 100 firefighters were called to the scene to help battle the flames. They were initially hindered by metal roll-down doors and security gates when they arrived on the scene, officials said.

Deputy Fire Chief Donald Peterson told News 12 New Jersey firefighters were met with heavy smoke and fire as the furniture inside the building quickly ignited.

Fire officials said a neighboring building suffered some water damage. The owner of that building was treated on the scene for anxiety.
