WOODBRIDGE - Smoke continues to billow into the night sky as crews continue to douse burning buildings at a Middlesex County apartment complex.

The four-alarm fire occurred at the Woodbridge Village Apartments in Avenel.

The blaze destroyed nearly 50 apartments, leaving dozens looking not only for a place to spend the night, but a new place to live.

The fire was reported just after 3 p.m. The Woodbridge mayor's office said a total of two buildings, numbers 36 and 37, were consumed by the fire. Officials say the fire started in the rear of building 36 and quickly spread to building 37.

No injuries were been reported. The American Red Cross says it is assisting families who have been displaced by the fire.
