BLOOMFIELD - Fire crews battled a three-alarm fire in a four-story building that houses eight apartments and a day care center in Bloomfield Friday afternoon.

The day care center was empty and there are no reports of injuries. Officials say everyone who was in the building, including pets, have been accounted for.

Firefighters say there was a significant amount of damage to the building. Two apartments in the rear of the building are a total loss. Other units had water damage.

At least 30 residents have been displaced. The Red Cross was called to the scene to assist.

A portion of Bloomfield Avenue was shut down during the firefighting effort.

Investigators are looking into reports of a gas explosion in the building. They say the fire started in the kitchen area of one of the apartments but have not released information on a possible cause for the fire.
