CARLSTADT - Across New Jersey, firefighters are educating children about the importance of fire safety during Fire Prevention Week.

In Carlstadt, firefighters taught children about escape plans, smoke alarms and how to dial 911.

Officials say across the state there have been 380 house fires resulting in 35 deaths and more than 280 injuries, many of which could have been prevented.

Firefighters also say now is a good time to check the batteries in smoke detectors.
