Fire officials: Fatal Newark house fire started in living room

NEWARK - Fire officials say they believe a house fire that killed a young child and left another critically injured yesterday started in the living room of the second-floor apartment.

Authorities say Amiee Luna, 3, and Miguel Frias, 5, were on the second-floor of a three-story home on the 200 block of North 6th Street in Newark. The fire broke out just after midnight. Witnesses say neighbors attempted to scale the side of the home in an effort to rescue the trapped children.

Newark Fire Department officials say seven others were taken to University Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The 5-year-old was flown by helicopter to the St. Barnabas Medical Center where he remains in intensive care.

Approximately 50 firefighters were called in to help fight the blaze.
