NEWARK - A three-alarm fire overnight in Newark has left several families homeless.

The fire broke out at around 11:30 p.m. at the Happy Garden restaurant on Lincoln Park near Clinton Avenue.

Thirty-eight-year-old Ronnie Mayers, who got his wife and four kids out of the building, said the fire smelled like cooking grease.

Authorities tell News 12 New Jersey that no one was seriously injured, but that about 50 people in all were evacuated. Several residents were reportedly rescued from fire escapes by firefighters.

Dozens of firefighters remained at the scene this morning to douse the remaining hot spots.

Authorities are working to determine the cause of the blaze.
