PLAINFIELD - A house and an attached auto body shop were destroyed after a fire tore through the buildings this morning in Plainfield.

Crews from PSE&G drilled underground to shut off the gas main in order to keep it from fueling the fire, which is believed to have started in the house's basement and spread to the adjoining auto body shop. Four people were in the house at 428 West 2nd St. at the time, and all managed to escape safely. Surrounding homes, which are also without gas now, were also damaged. Fire officials say the damage isn't serious.

More than 60 firefighters helped get the flames under control. According to fire officials, no one was injured and approximately 20 displaced people are receiving assistance from the Red Cross. So far, there is no word on what caused the fire.
