EAST ORANGE - A fire has destroyed a grocery store in East Orange.

The fire started just after 12:30 p.m. Friday at the Fine Fare grocery store near South Orange Avenue and Brookdale Avenue. Fire officials say the blaze started in the basement of the shop.

The building’s roof collapsed due to the flames, but the fire did not spread to nearby businesses due to the firewalls.

The store was open at the time the fire started. Nearby homes and businesses have been evacuated as a precaution.

Three firefighters suffered minor injuries and were taken to the hospital to be checked out.

It took firefighters nearly two hours to get the fire under control.
