PERTH AMBOY - A congregation is looking for a new place to worship after an overnight blaze tore through a historic church in Perth Amboy.

The three-alarm blaze broke out at around 1 a.m. Monday at the Saints Cyril and Methodius National Catholic Church.

Firefighters worked at the Jacques Street church through the night to bring the fire under control. They say they are relieved they could prevent the fire from spreading to nearby homes. They also said that the flames came dangerously close to the rectory.

Fencing has gone up around the church, which will eventually be brought down.

It's unclear what exactly sparked the blaze, but the fire chief says it does not look suspicious.
